Sri Shankari - The Universal Mother | Indian Classical Dance

Sri Shankari - The Universal Mother | Indian Classical Dance

An original contemporary collaboration between Indian classical dance and music that celebrates gender equality in Indian mythology. This collaboration, of Bharatanatyam, Mridangam, Kanjira and Konnakol, in Bahudari raga, Tisra Triputa talam, depicts the different manifestations of goddess Devi. As “Shankari” the consort of lord Shankara, as “Annai” the mother of Ganesha & Muruga, and as “Malai Magal” the daughter of the hills. At the heart of this classical piece is gender equality, portrayed through the description of Ardhanari, the divine union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Shakthi into one body, an embodiment of equality between man and woman. Conceived by Akshay Anantapadmanabhan (Mridangam, Konakkol, Kanjira, music arrangement) and Sudharma Vaithiyanathan (Bharathanatyam, Konakkol, Nattuvangam, choreography), the creative team that brought it all together includes Mahesh Raghvan (Music arrangement, Mixing and Programming), A. Lakshmanaswamy (Choreography), G Vijayaraghavan (Lyric and Jathi Composition), K Hariprasad (Vocal and Music Composition) and Aswin George John (Sound Engineer) …………. the spiritual union of Purusha and Prakriti, Consciousness and Energy as one The artists can be reached at Akshay Anantapadmanabhan https://facebook.com/AkshayAnantapadmanabhan https://www.instagram.com/akshaylaya https://www.youtube.com/AkshayLaya Sudharma Vaithiyanathan https://instagram.com/sudharmaaa https://youtube.com/channel/UCljxGwB7hGxLkhc6NoGLKFQ https://facebook.com/sudharmaaa/ To invite this group for a live concert, please visit https://indianraga.com/live or email info@indianraga.com To feature in an IndianRaga production, apply to be an IndianRaga Fellow at indianraga.com/fellowship IndianRaga brings together the best musicians and dancers across 60 international cities to collaborate on high quality music videos viewed by millions of people globally. This Indian semi-classical song has popular versions by well-known singers J.Yesudas, Sooryagayathri, and film singer Niranjana Ramanan. This contemporary adaptation of the song, with added elements like harmonies and Double track, was conceptualized by Vocalist Madhu Iyer who is accompanied by Poornima Emani (Flute) and Akshay Anantapadmanabhan (Mridangam, Kanjira, Konnakol). The song starts with a Jathi piece taken from J.Yesudas’ version, then unfolds into an exchange between Konnakol and the Jathi, after which begins the Pallavi, Swagatham Krishna. The charanam of the piece is the highlight where the time signature changes. The arrangement now becomes contemporary even as the lyrics celebrate the famous Kalinga Narthana by Lord Krishna, which is conveyed by the union of all the instruments the Flute, Mridangam, Kanjira as well as the vocals.
