This is the first episode of this series of short videos, each of which highlight one element of a mridangam (South Indian hand drum) solo or "taniavartanam", in no particular order. While the focus here is on Carnatic mridangam rhythms, the underlying concepts can be generalized to any form of percussion. The video is not intended to be a full classical solo but moreso a simple improvisation just around one concept -- in this case, "sarvalaghu" or naturally flowing rhythm.

While the focus here is on Carnatic mridangam rhythms, the underlying concepts can be generalized to any form of percussion. The video is not intended to be a full classical solo but moreso a simple improvisation just around one concept -- in this case, "misra" nadai or fitting seven syllables per beat performed in Adi talam (8/4 time). Listening on headphones or non-Bluetooth speakers will have the best audio-visual syncing for the tala (hand gestured time) cues.
